Why Do Yoga?
Yoga is one of the oldest modes of exercise. This ancient tradition, originating in the East, has been
keeping people fit, strong and centered for over 3,000 years. The Sanskrit word “yoga” means to yoke
(or unite); union. The goal of practicing yoga is to unite one’s thoughts and actions.
Doing Yoga can improve many areas of health: The right yoga postures, can stretch, strengthen and
truly benefit the body for such ailments as:
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Depression
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Low back pain
- Poor posture
- Stress and muscle tension
Practicing Yoga can boost your energy, as well as strengthen and sculpt your muscles. It enhances
balance, body alignment and body awareness. It can elevate your mood, or it can be very calming. It
can help us better connect with ourselves and our environment (physical, social and mental/spiritual).
The appropriate Yoga-style combined w/ meditation can improve overall heart health. **According to a
study published by the Archives of Internal Medicine (2006), regular practice of meditation can
significantly reduce blood pressure, heart rate variability and insulin resistance.

This amazing, ancient mode of exercise is a great choice for every body at any fitness level.
**According to Fitness Magazine (September 2006) and it's source quoted Roger Cole, PhD and Yoga
instructor - “Standing poses build strength and stamina. Balancing poses improve balance and
promote focus. Forward bends stretch the back and hamstrings. Back bends open the chest and can
improve breathing. Twisting poses aid digestion, and strengthen the abdominal muscle group.
Inversions may be challenging but beneficial, and are known to aid our body’s circulation“.
Yoga may also be one of our only “non-competitive” movement activities.
It is based upon the following simple principles ---
It allows us to mindfully practice letting go of our judgements and expectations.
Doing Yoga teaches us to honor our own body’s, our environment and others. It can allow us time to
be present with our thoughts. As we continue to practice it gives us an outlet for tension where one
can settle their busy mind, and move the body. Practicing Yoga regularly is a wonderful way to find
balance and energy for your body and daily life activity. It also ensures that you have a well-balanced
workout routine. You can learn a lot about your body from practicing yoga consistently.
